Welcome to the Hand to Heart Project!

I am a clinical psychologist and paediatric neuropsychologist who has a passion for psychology, neuroscience and photography. I have specialised in working with children, adolescents, young adults, and parents for more than 20 years.

Over this time scientific research has led to profound changes in our understanding of the way children's brains grow and develop. We now know more than previous generations. Because of this we have a new understanding of the way we need to parent and relate to our children. In the uncertainty of today's world the importance of safe, strong parent-child relationships is more necessary than ever before.

The Hand to Heart Project was created as a unique blending of art and science, to provide a resource to those interested in the exciting developments in the neuroscience of attachment, child development and parenting, through the medium of visual storytelling.

Hand to Heart reflects the deep attachment bonds that develop, as a parent holds their child in safety.

  • “I don’t know if I was ready for it... just the first few months of my baby’s life was like – almost like – take him back! It was so hard”.

  • “I think you’d better go to the doctor” – this is how Linda, a young 18-year-old, discovered she was pregnant.”

  • “Poor kid. He’s in the wrong family... I just can’t believe I thought that my kids would have the same personality as us."

Portraiture Photography
+ Personal Narratives

Each family dynamic and history is so unique and the growth and development of our children is proven to be deeply affected by it. The Hand to Heart project is a merging of portraiture photography and personal narratives which will communicate, and highlight, contemporary neuroscience research from psychology experts in the fields of attachment, child development, and parenting.

I hope you’ll enjoy taking a deep dive into the research, and its relevance to our role as parents, and for our children’s growth and development.

“I was inspired to create this unique project to combine my two passions, psychology and photography; both of which have the power to inform, stimulate our thoughts, and challenge our beliefs.”

– Megan Fowler, founder of Hand To Heart Project
